Chardham Yatra
Tirtha Yatra holds great spiritual importance in Hinduism. It is believed that visiting sacred places purifies the mind, reduces past karmas, and strengthens a devotee’s connection with the divine. One of the most sacred pilgrimages is the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, which includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These shrines are dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, Goddess Ganga, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu. Devotees believe that completing this journey with faith brings spiritual purification, inner peace, and divine blessings, making it a deeply transformative experience for millions of pilgrims.
Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is considered the origin of the Yamuna River. The temple is situated at an altitude of about 3,293 meters in Uttarkashi district.
Gangotri is devoted to Goddess Ganga and marks the spiritual source of the holy Ganges River. The temple stands at around 3,048 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas.
Kedarnath, located at 3,583 meters in Rudraprayag district, is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is believed to be over a thousand years old.
Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, lies at an altitude of 3,133 meters in Chamoli district and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus.
DATES
The Char Dham Yatra 2026 will begin in April and continue until November according to the Hindu religious calendar. The temples of Yamunotri and Gangotri will open on 19 April on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. Kedarnath Temple will open on 22 April, while Badrinath Temple will open on 23 April. The Char Dham temples usually close after Diwali and Bhai Dooj in November, when heavy snowfall begins in the Himalayan region, making travel difficult. During winter, the temple idols are moved to lower-altitude temples for worship.
REGISTRATION PROCESS & VEHICLE FINESS TEST
For the Char Dham Yatra, it is mandatory for all pilgrims to complete the official registration before starting the journey. The registration is managed by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) and the Government of Uttarakhand to ensure the safety, monitoring, and proper management of pilgrims during the yatra.
Pilgrims can register online through the Char Dham Yatra Registration Portal or through the official mobile app and designated registration counters in Uttarakhand.
This registration helps authorities track pilgrim movement, manage crowd control, and provide assistance during emergencies, ensuring a safer and more organized pilgrimage experience.
Authorities may also verify the mandatory Yatra registration of pilgrims at checkpoints.
During the Char Dham Yatra, all vehicles traveling from Delhi or Haridwar must undergo a mandatory fitness check by the Uttarakhand Transport Department. This ensures the vehicle is suitable for hilly roads. After inspection, vehicles receive a Green Card/Green Tag permitting travel on the Char Dham route.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
The best time to undertake the Char Dham Yatra is before the monsoon (May–June) and after the monsoon (September–October). During these months, the weather is relatively stable, the skies are clearer, and road conditions are generally safer for travel in the Himalayan region.
Travel during the monsoon season (July–August) is usually not recommended. Heavy rainfall in the mountains often causes landslides, road blockages, and traffic disruptions, which can delay or even stop the journey. Pilgrims may also face flooded roads, slippery trekking paths, flight or helicopter cancellations, and sudden weather changes.
Trekking routes such as Kedarnath and Yamunotri become particularly risky due to muddy trails and falling rocks. Accommodation and transport services can also be affected during continuous rain.
Therefore, for a safer and more comfortable pilgrimage, it is advisable to plan the Char Dham Yatra either before the monsoon or after the rainy season.
HECOPTER SERVICE
For the Kedarnath Yatra, pilgrims also have the option to travel by helicopter. Helicopter tickets can be booked directly through the official IRCTC HeliYatra website, and the service is open to all pilgrims. However, it is mandatory to complete the Char Dham Yatra registration before booking the helicopter ticket.
It is important to note that IRCTC is the only authorized platform for Kedarnath helicopter bookings, and no agents are officially permitted to sell these tickets. Pilgrims should avoid third-party websites or agents to prevent fraud and always book through the official IRCTC portal.
Helicopter services usually operate from Phata, Sirsi, and Guptkashi helipads, depending on availability and weather conditions.
FACILITES & TRAVEL OPTIONS
The Char Dham Yatra involves trekking at two shrines—Yamunotri and Kedarnath—while Badrinath and Gangotri are easily accessible by road.
At Yamunotri Temple, pilgrims trek about 6 km from Janki Chatti. For those who cannot walk, pony, palki, and doli services are available. The approximate charges are ₹5,000–₹8,000 for ponies(both way) and ₹9,000–₹12,000 for palki/doli (both way), depending on the season and government rates.
At Kedarnath Temple, the trek is around 16–18 km from Sonprayag/Gaurikund. Pilgrims can choose pony, palki, or doli services, typically costing ₹6000–₹9,000 for ponies and ₹10,000–₹15,000 for palki/doli (both way). Helicopter services are also available for Kedarnath from places like Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi, with fares usually ranging from ₹7,000–₹9,000 per person for a round trip.
At Badrinath Temple and Gangotri Temple, no trekking is required, and devotees can reach the temples directly by road for easy darshan.
CLOTHES & MUST-CARRY ITEAMS
During the Char Dham Yatra, weather in the Himalayas can change quickly, so pilgrims should carry warm and comfortable clothing. Pack woolen jackets, sweaters, thermal wear, gloves, woolen caps, and comfortable trekking shoes. Raincoats or ponchos are also useful due to sudden rainfall. Essential items include personal medicines, a small first-aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, reusable water bottles, energy snacks, and ID proof. It is also advisable to carry a flashlight, power bank, and basic toiletries. Proper preparation helps ensure a safe, comfortable, and spiritually fulfilling Char Dham pilgrimage.
